Choose keywords and tweak your site for the search engines.
Once your site looks good to humans, the next step is to try to make it look good to the search engines, so you get high ranking. This involves choosing the right keywords and adjusting your page title, meta tags and first paragraph to showcase them. This requires thought. Choose keywords by thinking about how people are going to try to find them.
Title Tag – Unique for every page
- max 85 characters-click here for the character counter
- Copy describing the page using keywords. You want to try to get your main keyword at the beginning of each title tag. For the home page you may want to put the company name at the beginning for branding purposes, but otherwise I would put it at the end or not include it.
Meta-description
- 200 characters
- Sales copy describing the page using keywords. The first sentence of every meta-description should be unique, after that you can repeat sales copy or the company tagline.
Meta-keywords
- max 15 words
- Use keywords that are used on the page first. If not, then use keywords that are related to the products on the website. You can repeat keywords on different pages but you want more coverage so it is better off using different keywords on each page. You may find the Search-based Keyword Tool to be useful.
